Local company assists in development of 2010 census

RIT and ADI partner with the United State Census Bureau on the 2010 census

Advanced Document Imaging, or ADI, a product of RIT’s Venture Creations business incubator, has partnered with the United States Census Bureau to perform quality assurance testing for both questionnaire printing and electronic data capture in the 2010 Census.

“ADI has developed technology that assists in assessing the quality of image capture and data collection, ultimately improving its use in a host of areas,” says Bradley Paxton, company co-founder and chief executive officer. “We are very proud to collaborate with the Census Bureau to improve its data capture and analysis capabilities.”

ADI developed the technology and instrumentation to measure the quality of printed materials and assisted in developing the Quality Information for Successful Printing system that was used by the Census Bureau and the Government Printing Office to assess print quality during production of the census questionnaire.

The company also developed the Production Data Quality test system that was used to independently evaluate data capture production quality by sampling almost a million forms and reporting the results to the Census Bureau.

ADI has been consulting for the census since 1993, when it was instrumental in the bureau’s use of digital electronic imaging and computer automation for the first time to process the 2000 census. Over the years, ADI has also assisted the bureau with data analysis, form designs and electronic data capture and data quality evaluation.

The company, now based in its own facility in Henrietta, developed out of the RIT Research Corporation, now known as Venture Creations, and was incorporated in 2002. Currently, 10 RIT alumni work for the company, including chief operating officer Todd Johnsson ’00 (MBA). ADI also has longstanding research partnerships with RIT’s Printing Industry Center and the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science.

“Our connection to RIT has been central in ADI’s growth and development through the improvement of our current technology, the utilization of numerous RIT graduates in our business operations and the utilization of RIT expertise in our current research and new product development efforts,” Paxton says.
