Marcos Esterman

Marcos Esterman, associate professor of industrial and systems engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology, has been appointed faculty associate by RIT Provost Jeremy Haefner. As faculty associate, Esterman will play a significant role in the university-wide mentoring program for its African American, Latino American and Native American faculty, also referred to as AALANA. He will also provide insight into strategic changes that can be made to increase AALANA faculty success and guidance to faculty members navigating the promotion and tenure process. The appointment is for three years. Esterman assumed his new role in January.

“This represents an opportunity to make an impactful difference at RIT,” says Esterman who began at RIT in 2004, and teaches in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering. “My hope is that my methodical approach to identify solutions to problems, coupled with my collaborative work-style, will yield meaning and long-lasting results.”

Esterman will continue to serve as a representative of the engineering college on the AALANA Faculty Advisory Council. He is one of the advisors for the RIT student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and serves on the Faculty Undergraduate Research Advisory Committee in support of the university’s McNair Scholars program.

Outside of RIT, he is an executive board member of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. and is a long-time member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, holding several leadership positions and serving as technical chair of several of the organization’s conference committees.

He received his doctoral degree from Stanford University and his Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Esterman joins Margaret Bailey, professor of mechanical engineering in the faculty associate role. She was appointed in the 2009-2010 academic year as the faculty associate for female faculty.
