National speaker Lawrence Ross visits March 17
National speaker will discuss cultural identity and political activism on college campuses
Lawrence Ross, expert on the traditions and culture of college fraternities and sororities, will be featured during an evening address at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, in the Student Development Center at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf. He is presenting “Know Better, Do Better: College, Racism and You.”
His most recent book, Blackballed: The Black and White Politics of Race of America’s Campuses, was published in February. Ross will detail some of these histories of as well as issues of campus hazing, and how generations of African American students have been shaped by involvement in, or exclusion from, these campus organizations.
The program is free and open to RIT campus members and the general public. Ross’ presentation, originally scheduled for Feb. 16, was postponed when the RIT campus was closed due to poor weather.
Black Heritage Month events are sponsored by RIT’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion in partnership with the Center for Campus Life, School of Communication, the William A. Kern Professorship in Communication, the Black Awareness Coordinating Committee, Multicultural Greek Council, RIT Panhellenic Council and the Multicultural Center for Academic Success.
