New Student Government leaders focus on creating community

A proactive approach to creating a community for all student groups, clubs and organizations is on the agenda for new Student Government leaders Taylor Deer and Sarah Thomas. The pair will head Student Government as president and vice president, respectively, for the 2012-2013 academic year.

“Sarah and I worked so hard getting our name out there and listening to what students have to say,” says Deer, a fourth-year management major from Williamsville, N.Y. “We learned so much in the process.”

Deer and Thomas say one theme of their administration will be enhancing student life on campus. Expanding the Tiger East End Express bus system is one way they hope to accomplish this.

“This includes earlier hours for the bus and expanding the number of stops to cultural areas and museums downtown,” says Thomas, a second-year finance student from Clifton Park, N.Y.

They hope to increase the sense of community among student groups by finding a space on campus prioritized for clubs to meet and store items. Other goals include increasing collaboration by altering the event registration system to help link organizations with similar values and encouraging student innovation.

“We have so many brilliant students that go to RIT,” Deer says. “We would like to utilize their skills and talents to help improve our campus.”

The pair is very involved on campus, having previously held positions in Student Government.

“I’m glad I have the opportunity to continue making a difference in student lives,” Thomas says.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us and it is extremely exciting to know that have the chance to make some big changes on this campus,” Deer says.
