NTID names new National Advisory Group member

Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf has announced the appointment of Marlene Mata as a new member of the college’s National Advisory Group.

Members of the NTID National Advisory Group, whose appointments are approved by the U.S. Department of Education, advise the NTID president in developing and carrying out policies governing the operation and direction of the college. The group comprises professionals concerned with the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students, professionals concerned with postsecondary education, and individuals familiar with the need for the services provided by NTID.

Mata is an RIT/NTID alumna and currently serves as a rehabilitation counselor for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals served by the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission. She has more than 10 years of experience in the vocational rehabilitation field.

“Marlene has devoted her career to improving employment opportunities for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing,” said NTID President Gerry Buckley. “NTID will benefit from her knowledge and experience as we carry out our mission to prepare deaf and hard-of-hearing students for successful careers.”

Mata earned a bachelor’s degree in social welfare and human resource management through RIT’s multidisciplinary studies program. She also hold a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from Hunter College in New York City.

“RIT/NTID prepared me well for graduate school and my career, and I am excited to now have the opportunity to give back and help shape the lives of other deaf and hard-of-hearing young people through my service on NTID’s National Advisory Group,” said Mata.
