Openings Still Available for Everyday Engineering Programs for Girls

Summer programs are open to girls in elementary, middle and high school

The Women in Engineering program still has openings for its annual Everyday Engineering summer engineering camps for young women.

WE@RIT, the Women in Engineering program at Rochester Institute of Technology, has openings for its annual Everyday Engineering summer engineering camps for young women. The group will also host an exploration program for high school-age girls in August. Openings are available for this program as well. Both take place at RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

Everyday Engineering consists of two, one-week, non-residential camp sessions for girls entering 5–6th grade and 7–9th grade. The camps take place July 9–13 and July 23–27.

The young women participate in engineering design projects, team-building and recreation activities. This year, the activities are themed “World in Motion” and include a rocket build and launch activities, assembling skateboards, tours of RIT’s fuel cell laboratory and making 3-D space station models.

The cost for the Everyday Engineering program is $300 per week. Family discounts are available.

The WE Explore Engineering Program is for high-school-age students who want to learn more about the varied fields of engineering and the career options available. This one-day program is slated for 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Aug. 2. The cost for the program is $80. Participants will learn about various engineering disciplines, meet female RIT engineering students and faculty, experience the RIT campus and participate in a team engineering challenge.

Scholarships are also available through an endowment established in 2010 by a donation from Harris RF Communications. The local company donated $100,000 to the engineering college to help provide support to area students without the financial means to attend the programs.

The WE@RIT program to supports women currently enrolled in engineering programs at RIT and sponsors numerous community workshops and camps to encourage girls in grades 4-12 to consider engineering as a career option. More information about the summer opportunities is available online at the RIT Women in Engineering website or by calling the program office at 585-475-6321.
