    Luke Smeltzer, a second-year marketing major from Halifax, Nova Scotia and a member of the men’s lacrosse team, reads to first graders at School No. 5 during the annual Giant Read event. RIT Libraries staff and RIT student-athletes visited the school for the 10th annual Giant Read to serve as role models and help students get excited about reading. The staff and students read the book Amazing Tigers to nearly 65 first graders. At the end, each student received a book to help encourage further reading.

    Marija Ratkeviciute, left, a fine arts graduate student in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences (CIAS) and Associate Professor Elizabeth Kronfield (CIAS) co-presented “We Are (More Than) the Sum of Our Parts.” The RIT Graduate Showcase, hosted by RIT‘s Office of Graduate Education, highlighted research and scholarship by graduate students from all colleges at RIT.

    The RIT Archives celebrated the 50th anniversary of alumnus Bernie Boston’s “Flower Power” photograph with a panel discussion. RIT faculty, Michael Brown, standing, Joseph Henning, Tamar Carroll and Jennifer Poggi, spoke about the relevance of the image then and now.

    Anna Jacobson, left, a fourth-year mechanical engineering student from Aldie, Virginia, practiced basket weaving techniques with Nicole Scott, co-director of the Future Stewards Program. Native American Heritage Month kicked-off Nov. 1. with weaving activities, food and music in Fireside Lounge. Posters were displayed with information about modern Native Americans.

    Alexa Kline, a second-year electrical engineering major from Waverly, N.Y., adds the final touch to her mini-pumpkin at a decorating party to prepare for Halloween. The RIT College Activities Board hosted a pumpkin painting party, with supplies and treats, to get in the spirit for Halloween.

CIAS Foundations students were challenged by faculty for the second year in a row to create original outfits made completely out of paper and paper-based planar materials. Students showed off these wearable paper outfits they based on art historical periods and styles of their choosing during the Beaux Arts Ball on Oct. 27. They spent the last 1-2 weeks building these pieces.

Almerdasi and his team created Huruf to help teach young people Arabic. The game was officially launched during a celebration at Workinman on Oct. 19.     Elana Aronson, a third-year computational math major from Marblehead, Mass., got drenched during a fundraiser for the Polar Plunge by the Tiger Statue. The Polar Plunge, to be held in February 2018 at Ontario Beach Park, is an annual fundraiser for Special Olympics New York.

    RIT students were treated to a holiday-themed dinner and entertainment to celebrate Diwali at Grace Watson Dining Hall. The Diwali Festival of Lights event featured dance by RIT Bhangara and a menu that included samosas, naan, ras malai, rajma masala, chicken peppercorn, bombay potatoes and several desserts.
