Photographer and RIT Alumnus Zwelethu Mthethwa Presents at RIT March 11
Mthethwa’s work examines economic and political realities of present-day South Africa
Acclaimed photographer and South African native Zwelethu Mthethwa, who began his career as a painter and photographer during apartheid in South Africa, returns to Rochester Institute of Technology March 11. He will discuss the photographic body of work featured in his newly released monograph Zwelethu Mthethwa, published by Aperture.
Best known for his large-format color photographs, his artistry examines the economic and political realities of present-day South Africa. Mthethwa will speak at 7 p.m. March 11, in the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science auditorium. His presentation is free and open to the public.
In 1987, Mthethwa was awarded a Fulbright scholarship, which gave him the opportunity to come to the United States and study at RIT. Mthethwa earned a master’s degree in imaging arts. Following graduation, he returned home to South Africa where he lectured on photography and drawing at the Michaelis School of Fine Art. He currently resides and works in Cape Town, South Africa.
