Pollution Prevention Institute Demonstrates Eco-Friendly Alternative to Dry Cleaning

Dry cleaners across New York are learning about the environmental benefits and cost-saving opportunities with wet cleaning. New York State Pollution Prevention Institute is hoping to show the benefits with a free demonstration.

The Pollution Prevention Institute, located at Rochester Institute of Technology, is offering Wet Cleaning Demonstration Day at All Fabric Cleaners in Farmingville from 10:30 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. April 24. The morning session is geared toward a range of stakeholders interested in dry and wet cleaning, while the afternoon session is intended specifically for dry cleaners.

“Wet cleaning is a way for dry cleaners to be more environmentally responsible as well as save money,” says Kate Winnebeck, NYSP2I Wet Cleaning Program manager. “Cleaners who have converted to this process are making strides in environmental impact while saving money and are willing to share information with others.”

Owners and operators interested in wet cleaning will have the opportunity to see a demonstration of equipment, hear from All Fabric Cleaners’ staff about the system, hear how cleaners have saved money with wet cleaning and learn about financial incentives for the process.

Wet cleaning is an environmentally preferable alternative to perchloroethylene, or perc, which cleans dry-clean-only garments in water with specialized detergents and equipment.
