Professor's designs help Rochester airport renovation take flight

The Greater Rochester International Airport recently received a $79 million facelift, a project that a faculty member in Rochester Institute of Technology’s College of Art and Design contributed to.

Gary Jacobs, assistant professor in the college’s 3D digital design program, completed the concept design and 3D model used for a new walkway canopy, one of many improvements installed at the airport. The structure covers the arrival and departure areas, masking passengers from inclement weather. It is also equipped with an LED lighting system.

“This project was an incredible example of combining art and technology to benefit the community on a project that I hope will be a beacon to our exciting region for generations,” Jacobs said. He was invited to the Oct. 31 ribbon-cutting event, during which state and local officials spoke about the project.

Below are some of Jacobs' renderings and sketches.
