Registration Open for Junior FIRST Lego League Teams

The youngest members of the FIRST Robotics family of competitors will display their robots and science projects at the second annual Brick City Junior FIRST Lego League Expo on March 18 at RIT. Registration continues for area teams made up of 6- to 9-year-olds.

Registration is open for the youngest competitors in the FIRST Robotics family to showcase their projects at the upcoming Brick City Junior Lego League Expo March 18 at Rochester Institute of Technology. The event takes place 11 a.m.–3 p.m. in the Student Alumni Union.

Openings remain for teams of two to six students. Register until Feb. 24. The cost for a team registration is $25.

“Junior FIRST Lego League is an event directed toward children ages 6–9 in the hopes of getting them interested in science and technology fields,” says Shannon Files, a fourth-year engineering student and current RIT FIRST Robotics Club president. The club is hosting the event for the second year.

“For the event, the children will work in teams to showcase projects related to a certain topic. This year the topic is food safety, called Snack Attack,” she adds. Teams will learn about simple machines as they build a model made of Lego elements with a motorized moving part, and they will create a team Show-Me Poster to represent their Snack Attack findings. There will be different STEM activities for children, displays of team projects, science demonstrations and other non-competitive events.

Entry on the day of the event is free to non-competitors, parents and community members.
