Remains of missing RIT student possibly located

10 A.M. APRIL 18 UPDATE:

Mary-Beth Cooper, RIT senior vice president for student affairs, issued the following statement this morning:

“Many of you woke up to news reports this morning regarding the discovery of a body late yesterday in Steuben County. New York State Police investigators have informed us that they strongly suspect it is the remains of RIT student George Delany.

“The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to make a positive identification, and State Police plan a news conference at 11 a.m. today to provide an update. We will be monitoring developments closely and will share the latest information as it becomes available.

“George Delany, a third-year political science major from Frederick, Md., had been missing since March 12. Members of the campus community have remained firmly engaged in the search for George ever since, and our appreciation goes to those who have worked so hard in the hopes of his safe return.

“I am proud of the way the community came together to support each other during this difficult time. Whatever the outcome of this discovery, the community will remain strong and continue to keep George and his family in our thoughts.”

Local media reported Sunday night that the remains of a body found earlier in the evening in Cohocton, Steuben County, could be those of RIT student George Delany, who has been missing since March 15.

The Leader, in Corning, reports that two hikers found the remains of a body in a wooded area at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday.

WHAM-TV (channel 13) reports that an autopsy will be performed by the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office to positively identify the remains.

State Police have scheduled a news conference for 11 a.m. Monday.
