RIT Announces Appointment to its Board of Trustees

Retired vice president of ExxonMobil adds expertise to university’s mission

Robert Dobies

Rochester Institute of Technology has added Robert Dobies to its board of trustees. The announcement was made during a recent RIT’s Trustees meeting.

Dobies is a retired vice president of ExxonMobil Chemical Co. and the current chair of the board of trustees for Rochester General Health System. RIT and RGHS formed a partnership in late 2008 to capitalize on the strengths of both institutions. Since then, the RIT-RGHS Alliance has developed several collaborative initiatives.

Dobies retired from ExxonMobil Chemical Co. in 2008, following a career spanning 42 years. During that time, he served as vice president of various divisions. Prior to his retirement, Dobies was vice president with responsibility for ExxonMobil Chemical Co.’s global films business, a leading manufacturer of plastic film for food packaging.

He also served as vice president of planning and finance for Mobile Chemical Co. in Fairfax, Va., vice president of the films division, and general manager of European operations in Virton, Belgium.

During his career, Dobies became the general manager in northern Europe, vice president of administration for Mobil Plastics Europe, and president of Mobil Plastics Italiana in Scarperia, Italy.

Dobies, who earned his B.S. degree in finance from New York University, joined Mobil Corp. in 1965. Taking a leave of absence, Dobies enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam during 1966 and 1967 as an infantry platoon commander and, later, as a rifle company commander. He eventually attained the rank of captain. Following his military service, Dobies worked for Mobil in New York City and in the Rochester area until 1979, when he became general manager of the Plastics Division in Frankfort, Ill.

Dobies and his wife Maureen reside in Brighton.
