RIT Attempts to Break World Dodgeball Record May 1
Student organizers hope to draw 2,500 players to the largest single dodgeball game in history
Adults around the world have flashbacks of cowering in the corner of the school gymnasium during physical education class when the instructor announced that dodgeball would be the day’s featured activity. After all, what’s so great about someone hitting you square in the head with a ball hurled at top speed? For a group of Rochester Institute of Technology students, the chance to break a world record is worth it.

The event is expected to draw at least 2,500 players who will be split into two teams playing with more than 500 dodgeballs. A disc jockey and announcer will provide entertainment during the afternoon, and an after-party will be held for all who participate. The game is open to anyone over the age of 18 who registers prior to the event. All players will receive a free T-shirt.
“Organizing this event has been such a unique experience,” says Ross Kahn, a software engineering student at RIT. “For this dodgeball event, success hinges solely on the number of people we get to play. We expect the community to show up in force and make this world record a historical success.”
Event organizers are also looking for witnesses to help make it official. Guinness World Records requires one witness for every 50 dodgeball participants. Rules state that witnesses cannot be affiliated with RIT or any other witness and must be employed. Each witness will monitor approximately 50 players and provide a written statement verifying event authenticity. To volunteer to witness the game, e-mail info@dbworldrecord.com.
The record for the largest dodgeball game is held by University of Alberta in Canada with 2,012 participants.
