Mark Shapiro, from Oregon-based LAIKA, the award-winning animation studio behind the recently released The Boxtrolls, will give a presentation at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 and 9 at The Strong.

Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Film and Animation (SOFA) will help The Strong celebrate this week's inductees into the National Toy Hall of Fame this weekend with fun activities featuring previous honorees, including the cardboard box (2005) and jigsaw puzzle (2002).

Mark Shapiro, from Oregon-based LAIKA, the award-winning animation studio behind Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), and the recently released The Boxtrolls, will give a presentation at 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8 and 9, at The Strong.

The latest LAIKA feature tells the story of an orphaned boy raised by underground trash-collectors, who wear cardboard boxes like turtles wear their shells. Museum visitors will see original puppets and props from the movie and learn how the creative team from LAIKA brought these characters to life.

Visitors can continue the celebration by becoming a Boxtroll themselves and designing their own creatures using stop-motion animation with award-winning RIT professor Tom Gasek and some of his SOFA students.

Attendees also can become a piece of history and help put together “Wildlife,” the world’s largest jigsaw puzzle that consists of 33,600 pieces, while enjoying a variety of magnetic, wooden and floor puzzles courtesy of Educa.

All National Toy Hall of Fame Celebration Weekend activities—which will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 8 and 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 9—are included with general museum admission fees.

In addition, museum guests who show their admission receipt from Nov. 8 also will receive $1 off a special screening of The Boxtrolls at The Little Theatre, 240 East Ave. in downtown Rochester.
