RIT celebrates 2017 National Engineers Week

Justin Hamilton and Chris Stern, alumni of RIT’s civil engineering program and owners of the No. 1 company in Rochester’s Top 100 Companies of 2016, will be featured as “Innovators & Entrepreneurs,” one of several alumni sessions at RIT taking place during National Engineers Week, Feb. 20-25. The alumni will discuss managing the growth of their construction management firm Hamilton Stern Construction LLC at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, in Golisano Hall auditorium. The program is free and open to students, faculty and staff.

Established in 2010 and located in Pittsford, N.Y., Hamilton Stern Construction was recognized this fall as one of the fastest growing private companies in the area, according to the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce. It had placed 81^st on the annual Top 100 list in 2015, vaulting to the top placement this year through annual sales growth of more than 160 percent from 2014 to 2015. Employing 33 staff members, the team led multiple commercial and historic building renovation projects throughout the region.

Engineers Week takes place annually to highlight engineers’ contributions to society and to increase understanding of, and interest in, engineering and technology careers. RIT is one of hundreds of universities, corporations and government agencies involved in the national program. Events for the week at RIT have been planned by staff from the Kate Gleason College of Engineering, College of Applied Science and Technology and the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences.

During the week, events taking place include:

• Topical presentations, such as “All About Drones” at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in CIMS 2130. Presented by Agamemnon Crassidis, professor in RIT’s mechanical engineering department and an expert on unmanned vehicle systems. Crassidis is also RIT’s representative to NUAIR, a consortium of universities, corporations and government agencies working to integrate unmanned air systems such as drones, into the U.S. national airspace system.
• An Alumni Panel about “The Future of Engineering” at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the Xerox Auditorium, featuring Rick Langkamp ’83 (mechanical engineering), manager of manufacturing technology and new product development with Southco Inc.; Chris Lojek ’08 (computer engineering technology), international sales specialist at Harris RF Communications, and Stephen DeVay ’10 (software engineering) scrum master / agile coach with Constellation Brands.

Laboratory tours, career prep and résumé reviews, networking and social events also take place throughout the week. A full schedule of events can be found online.
