RIT cited for excellence in campus law enforcement

Public Safety is staffed by 30 full-time, uniformed officers. All officers are trained in emergency medical procedures, CPR, automated external defibrillators, first aid, sign language and crisis intervention.

Rochester Institute of Technology’s Department of Public Safety has been awarded accreditation by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. RIT Public Safety becomes one of the first institutions of higher education with non-sworn officers in the Northeast to receive this prestigious recognition.

Accreditation is awarded for a three-year period and will be formally recognized next month at the association’s annual conference in Charlotte, N.C.

“The process has undoubtedly made our agency better,” says Stacy DeRooy, Public Safety assistant director and the department’s accreditation manager. “The IACLEA assessment team provided phenomenal feedback relative to the department’s professionalism and student centeredness. Receiving IACLEA accreditation elevates the department to the highest standards in campus law enforcement. The men and women of RIT Public Safety have achieved a tremendous accomplishment, and I couldn’t be more proud.”

A team of the association’s assessors arrived on campus in March to examine all aspects of Public Safety’s policies and procedures, management, operation and support services. The accreditation process also required that the public and members of the RIT community receive the opportunity to provide comment about the department’s ability to comply with the association’s established standards.

Over the next three years, RIT must submit annual reports documenting ongoing compliance with standards under which it was initially accredited.
