Rochester Institute of Technology is inaugurating a new speaker series to promote career opportunities in communications, journalism and advertising.

The colloquium series, sponsored by Lambda Pi Eta, the communications student honor society, will bring leaders in the field to campus to discuss their experiences and provide advice to current students on current professional opportunities.

The inaugural event, “Journey from Communication Student to Communication Professional” will be held at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 22 in Eastman Hall, room 2000. It will feature Thomas Proietti, professor of communication at Monroe Community College, and Benjamin Harris, a product leader for integrated media reporting at the Nielsen Corp.

Proietti, the former chair of MCC’s Department of Communication, also founded the communications department at St. John Fisher College. Prior to entering academia he spent two decades as a journalist and media executive including serving as vice president of marketing and programming for Time Warner Communications in Rochester.

Harris is a 2007 alumnus of RIT’s E. Philip Saunders College of Business and currently assists in developing Neilsen products for both new and traditional media outlets. While at RIT he completed a co-op at ESPN at its corporate headquarters in Connecticut.

Lambda Pi Eta is a national honor society promoting scholarship and outreach in communication and public relations. RIT’s Xi Upsilon chapter is sponsored by the Department of Communication.
