RIT community gives back during the holidays
As RIT prepares for the holiday break, students, faculty and staff are searching for the perfect gifts for loved ones. At the same time, they are also busy giving back to different charitable organizations.
Selling snowman bookmarks for Hurricane Sandy relief and collecting cell phones for members of the U.S. military are just a few examples of the RIT community helping those in need.
Wagging Winter
The RIT Rescue Shelter Club is collecting toys, treats and funds to benefit local animal shelters. In addition, the club will take and print “howl-iday photos” for $2 each from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in the Student Alumni Union with a club member’s two pets, Kaia the dog and Mr. Muff the hedgehog. The club will also be in the SAU accepting donations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 19. To learn more about donating, go to the RIT Rescue Shelter Club Facebook page.
Snowmen for Sandy
The RIT Leadership Institute and Community Service Center has partnered with Margaret’s House Child Care Center at RIT to raise money for the American Red Cross to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. The kindergarten class made and sold snowman bookmarks in the Student Alumni Union, helping to bring in more than $200. The kindergarten class will sell bookmarks again from 11:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 19 in the Student Alumni Union. Although the number of bookmarks for sale is limited, you can still donate through the Leadership Center by contacting Phyllis Walker at 475-6056 or at ppwccl@rit.edu.
Cell Phones for Warriors
The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute is teaming up with Cell Phones for Soldiers to encourage people to donate old cell phones to help protect the environment and allow U.S. military personnel serving around the world to stay connected with their families. Donate old phones by Jan. 17 to any of these three drop-off locations:
- New York State Pollution Prevention Institute, Louise M. Slaughter Hall, room 2000
- Air Force ROTC, Lewis P. Ross Hall, room A250
- Army ROTC, Lewis P. Ross Hall, room A210
For questions about donating, contact Tracy Freas at 475-5807 or at taf3456@rit.edu.
Toys for Tots
The RIT Leadership Center has partnered with the Marine Corps to donate and deliver toys to Rochester families in need. More than 150 toys have already been donated. To find gift ideas, visit the Leadership Center in Campus Center, room 1030.
