RIT Encourages Community to ‘Stand Against Racism’

The Rochester Institute of Technology community is joining with the YWCA in a nationwide campaign to end racism. “Stand Against Racism,” held this year on April 29 is a day to heighten awareness of racism and encourage sites across the country to take a stand against prejudice and promote peace, justice, dignity, and diversity.

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to don RIT T-shirts and meet at 11:30 a.m. April 29 at the sundial sculpture north of Grace Watson Hall on the residential side of campus. As a symbol of unity, participants will march to the Tiger statue across from Eastman Kodak Quad. Upon arrival, activists will be encouraged to write down their own thoughts against racism. Willing participants can have their photos taken, which then will be professionally assembled into a mosaic to commemorate the day’s events.

“The Stand Against Racism not only perpetuates the mission of the YWCA but heightens awareness regarding racism,” says Michael D’Arcangelo, RIT’s director of diversity education. “This is the first year that RIT was approached to participate in this special event. It poses a unique opportunity by which students, faculty, and staff can develop a personalized understanding of racism and the personal power that they have as individuals to overcome it.”
