RIT holds math workshop for high school teachers

Teachers attended last year’s Summer Mathematics Institute Teachers’ Workshop to learn from RIT professors and industry professionals. This year’s workshop is June 24-27.

Later this month, high school math teachers from across Monroe County and beyond will come to Rochester Institute of Technology to attend talks on how high school math forms the basis for college courses and how it is used by professionals in various fields.

RIT’s School of Mathematical Sciences, part of the College of Science, hosts the sixth annual Summer Mathematics Institute Teachers’ Workshop June 24-27. This year’s workshop is sponsored by Bausch & Lomb and was designed by high school math teachers and their university counterparts to help address issues in the education of mathematical sciences.

Teachers will attend presentations given by a series of speakers, including professionals in various fields, as well as RIT professors. Among the notable talks this year are:

• Derek Brink of the Aberdeen Group will speak on computer security.
• Fran Labate of Scitor Corp. will speak on counter-terrorism.
• Marc Paulhamus of the U.S. Department of Defense will speak on math in national security.
• Alex Zapesochny, founder of iCardiac, will speak along with Nicole Antonoff on their mathematical work.
• Zhong Ding of Ortho Clinical Diagnostics will speak on the math and stats of immunoassays.
• Rob Stupplebeen of Bausch & Lomb will speak on the mathematical underpinnings of contact lens design.
• RIT professors Tony Harkin and Darren Narayan will speak on their work with neurologists at the University of Rochester on the mathematical analysis of brain trauma data for the National Football League.

“We have another excellent program this year, a collection of speakers as good as any we have had,” says David Ross, professor in the School of Mathematical Sciences. “We expect participants from throughout Monroe County, as usual, and more participants than ever from outside the county and outside New York state.”
