RIT honors its outstanding adult students

Annual event celebrates ‘balancing act’ of adult learners

Isaiah Tyler and Silvia Caraballo were recently honored as RIT’s Outstanding Adult Students. Missing from the photo is awardee Justin Farnsworth.

RIT students Isaiah Tyler, Silvia Caraballo and Justin Farnsworth have received the Outstanding Adult Student award. The award recognizes adult students and their achievements in successfully combining full-time college study with other adult responsibilities of family, career and community service.

Justin Farnsworth will graduate this month with a master’s degree from RIT’s online Executive MBA program. He will complete his studies with a projected 3.81 GPA while maintaining a full-time work schedule and full academic load. Prior to his current position at Citigroup, Farnsworth served nine years in the U.S. Navy and “hopes to use my talents, resources and leadership abilities to make a positive impact and leave the world a better place.”

Isaiah Tyler is working toward his bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language— English interpreting. He began studying at RIT full time in 2012 and has maintained a 3.92 GPA. He balances a full-time work schedule as a senior employment security clerk for New York state and hopes to become a nationally certified interpreter and pursue legal interpreting. Tyler expects to graduate next May.

Silvia Caraballo is completing her bachelor’s degree in applied arts and science with concentrations in human resource management and sociology/anthropology. She hopes to earn a master’s degree and become a college professor. Caraballo is a member of a nonprofit company that researches women and their political and economic standings, a concept born from fieldwork in Bolivia. She carries a 3.5 GPA and will graduate this month.
