RIT to host Student Wellness Fair on Oct. 28
What can students do to stay healthy?
There is no better time than during the college years to introduce healthy lifestyle choices as young adults begin to establish daily patterns that will be carried on throughout their lives. Many issues like alcohol, tobacco and drug use; sexual behavior; relationship issues; depression; stress; lack of sleep and other personal behaviors can be addressed through programs that emphasize healthy living and wellness education.
The first Brick City Student Wellness Fair will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Student Alumni Union at RIT.
The event is sponsored by the new Student Wellness Initiative and highlights RIT’s effort to improve holistic wellness across undergraduate and graduate levels.
“There is a nationwide focus on what people can do to prevent things like obesity and illness,” says Tim Keady, associate director for student wellness and health education. “Students need to make good choices for themselves starting at an early age. We want students to feel comfortable seeking help and information on what to do to be healthy.”
The wellness fair will provide information on the wide variety of RIT services and resources available to help ensure that students remain healthy and successful throughout college.
Health-care providers will give 15-minute presentations that answer the question, “What can RIT students do to keep themselves well?” Topics of discussion will address a variety of health dimensions including career and academic issues and physical, social, and emotional health.
As part of the RIT-Rochester General Health System Alliance, health-care professionals from Rochester General Hospital will be present to discuss diabetes, breast cancer, nutrition, stress and anxiety, and skincare and personal hygiene.
Question-and-answer sessions will conclude each short lecture. Volunteers will also be present to hand out educational materials and answer student questions.
