RIT Hosts Science Bowl Competition for Middle- and High-School Students Feb. 12

The National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science are sponsors of this year’s Regional Science Bowl that will be held Feb. 12 at RIT.

More than 100 young students representing 10 high schools and four middle schools from Rochester and Buffalo will descend upon Rochester Institute of Technology Feb. 12 to participate in the Regional Science Bowl competition. The contest runs 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Golisano Hall on RIT’s Henrietta campus. The event is invitation-only and not open to the general public.

The Regional Science Bowl at RIT consists of a fast-paced question-and-answer tournament designed to test students’ knowledge in life, physical, earth, and space sciences, as well as energy and mathematics. Similar to a sporting event, the round-robin format is followed by a double-elimination final tournament. The first-place team will be eligible to participate in the National Science Bowl held April 28–May 3 in Washington, D.C.

The Regional Science Bowl is part of the National Science Bowl competition coordinated by the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers and by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. In 2010, more than 5,000 students participated in regional events throughout the nation. Student participants are also eligible to apply and compete for academic scholarships.
