Meredith Smith has joined Rochester Institute of Technology as director of state and local government relations. Smith assumed her new responsibilities within RIT’s Division of Government and Community Relations on June 1.

A native of Rochester, Smith most recently served as a law clerk for a state trial judge and as an associate at a civil litigation firm. Prior to that, she worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., as a staff member for the Committee on Small Business in the U.S. House of Representatives. She also has advocacy experience, working for a grassroots community organization in Washington, where she established a government affairs office and developed and implemented an advocacy agenda.

“I am thrilled to join the Government and Community Relations staff at RIT and to return to my hometown,” Smith says. “RIT has so much to offer our state as well as our area communities and I am honored to advocate on its behalf.”

“I’m very pleased to have Meredith join our team,” adds Deborah Stendardi, RIT’s vice president for government and community relations. “Her returning to Rochester, after living in another part of the country for several years, is another validation of the quality of life in our community that draws talented professionals back home.”

Smith is a graduate of George Mason University School of Law. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Colgate University.
