RIT names Hector Flores as dean of graduate studies

Hector Flores

Hector Flores has been named dean of graduate studies, effective Sept. 1.

Flores has served in previous administrative roles, most recently as dean of science at Texas State University. He is currently serving as professor of biology at the Universidad Nacional de San Marcos in Lima, Peru.

Flores is internationally recognized for his work in plant biology.

Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Flores obtained a B.S. in biology from the Universidad Nacional de San Marcos. He earned an M.S. in horticulture from the University of Puerto Rico and a Ph.D. in biology from Yale University.

In addition to Texas State University, his research and academic career has led him to serve in faculty and administrative roles at Louisiana State University, Pennsylvania State University and Arkansas State University. He has been active in serving the federal government as program director at the National Science Foundation and as a consultant to the U.S. Department of State.

“Throughout his career, Dr. Flores has made a strong commitment to honors education, to the mentoring and recruitment of minorities in higher education and to international collaborations,” says Jeremy Haefner, RIT provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “In accepting the deanship, Dr. Flores brings with him an international reputation in plant biology, a commitment to recruit exceptional graduate students and a collaborative spirit. Under his guidance, I am convinced that graduate education will continue to excel and become another hallmark for RIT.”

Flores is replacing Andrew Moore, who is retiring. Moore has served as dean of graduate studies since 2007. Prior to that, Moore served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
