RIT on national list: ‘Great Colleges to Work For’

RIT has been recognized by The Chronicle of Higher Education on the publication’s list of “Great Colleges to Work For 2011.”

Rochester Institute of Technology has been recognized by The Chronicle of Higher Education on the publication’s list of “Great Colleges to Work For 2011.”

Among large four-year universities, RIT was specifically cited for its compensation and benefits. The university was also recognized for its on-site day care, health coaches, community garden and farmers’ market that “help to foster a sense of health and wellness for faculty and staff outside of their offices.”

RIT is one of 111 colleges and universities—among 310 institutions participating in the survey—designated as “exceptional places to work,” according to a July 24 announcement by The Chronicle. RIT was also recognized as a great workplace by the publication in 2008 and 2009—the first two years of the survey.

“We are pleased once again to be recognized as an exceptional place to work,” says RIT President Bill Destler. “We are proud of our workplace culture for faculty, staff and student employees—3,138 strong. A distinguished RIT workforce also bodes well for Greater Rochester as we attract talent to the community.”

Nearly 44,000 people employed in higher education nationally completed the survey, which identified 12 features of excellent academic workplaces—categorized as leadership, careers, compensation and the workplace. “Great academic workplaces are filled with people who believe that their jobs are important to the college, that the institution is important to the community, and that the college gives them the freedom to do that job well,” according to The Chronicle.
