RIT recognizes Outstanding Undergraduate Scholars

A portion of last year’s Outstanding Undergraduate Scholars. RIT is honoring this year’s Outstanding Undergraduate Scholars with a ceremony on April 11.

Rochester Institute of Technology will be honoring this year’s Outstanding Undergraduate Scholars with a ceremony on Thursday, April 11, at the Gordon Field House and Activities Center.

Teachers from high schools and community colleges as far away as California, who had an impact on the students’ academic careers, will be present at the ceremony, courtesy of RIT.

“The Outstanding Undergraduate Scholarship Awards ceremony and dinner remains a heart-warming anchor to our many celebrations of student achievement and excellence at RIT,” says Jeremy Haefner, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

There will be a reception at 4:30 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony at 5:30 p.m. where the students will receive a medallion. The reception and awards ceremony are open to the public. The night will conclude with a dinner at 7 p.m. for the students and their guests.

“Most moving is the dinner where we pay tribute to the K-12 and community college teachers these scholars acknowledge as having a tremendous influence on their lives,” says Haefner. “It is a true testimony to the art of teaching and learning. Anyone who has been, currently is, or aspires to be a teacher cannot help but feel the enormous impact teachers have on the lives of their students.”

The 101 students who will receive the award this year were selected based on numerous criteria, including the completion of at least 125 credit hours of college work and a grade point average of 3.85 or above. Community service, employment and research activities were also considered. No more than 1 percent of students from each of RIT’s nine colleges are selected for the award. This year, 36 of the recipients are also members of the honors program and 11 are from RIT’s international campuses.
