RIT and OSHA renew contracts for training at the Rochester campus

Rochester Institute of Technology was renewed as an Occupational Safety and Health Administration Training Institute Education Center, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. RIT has been serving in this capacity for 10 years and offers training courses on OSHA standards and occupational safety and health issues to workers and employers throughout the region.

Since 2003, RIT’s center has served more than 4,000 individuals in general industry, service, building and construction industries. Courses are taught by RIT faculty and instructors in industry who have been selected for professional credentials, teaching ability and real-world experience, says Kitren VanStrander, director of the OSHA Education Center at RIT.

“We are pleased to have been selected again as a training center and are committed to providing outstanding learning experiences that address today’s workplace issues,” VanStrander says. Each year more than 700 people participate in 81 classes in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, ergonomics and health hazard awareness. Participants also have non-credit certificate programs available to them in the areas of general industry safety and health, construction safety and health, and a third for those interested in recognition as a safety professional.

During the 2012 fiscal year, OSHA Training Institute Education Centers trained more than 40,000 people across the U.S. and there were record numbers of requests for occupational safety and health training from the private sector and federal agency personnel, according to David Michaels, assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health.

“The renewal of OSHA Training Institute Education Centers and the addition of four new centers will help OSHA to meet this demand and deliver life-saving training to our country's employers and workers.”
