RIT Student Receives Fulbright Award

The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. State Department and provides opportunities for students and faculty to study, teach and conduct research in countries across the globe.

Samir Nazir, a master’s student in the science, technology and public policy program at Rochester Institute of Technology, has been awarded a Fulbright Student Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State. He will spend a year serving as a visiting scientist at the National University of Singapore.

Nazir will assist in a project designed to analyze the economic and environmental benefits and costs of electric vehicles and their potential impact on Singapore’s transportation sector. The work builds on research he conducted at RIT, which analyzed various types of power plants using both conventional and alternative energy technologies, and evaluated the potential effects of their use.

“I am very honored to be selected for this program and look forward to assisting Singapore understand the consequences of alternative vehicle use,” Nazir says. “After several years of working in oil-field services, I seek to understand what is necessary to loosen the reliance of the transportation sector solely on petroleum-based technologies and to diversify the portfolio of energy sources powering vehicles in the face of expanding demand and consumption.”

The Fulbright Program, established in 1946, is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The program operates in over 155 countries worldwide.
