RIT Students ‘Light Up the Night’ to Fight Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault

Take Back the Night event features student dance, glow bracelets

RIT’s Take Back the Night event will be held Jan. 13.

It could be any woman, anywhere in the world, at any given time. For women worldwide, the fear of walking alone in the darkness to their parked cars or home from a late-night study session makes heartbeats race and hands shake.

Students at Rochester Institute of Technology are carrying on the tradition of making the night safe for women—if only for one night—during Take Back the Night, 9-11 p.m. Jan. 13 in RIT’s Student Development Center.

The first Take Back the Night event was held in 1975 in Philadelphia after the murder of a young female scientist who was stabbed by a stranger as she walked home alone. The event was commemorated by a candlelight march through Philadelphia streets.

On Jan. 13, RIT students will dance the night away wearing glow bracelets to help shed light on abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault. A $1 donation is required for entry to the event; participants will receive a glow bracelet and all proceeds will be donated to the YWCA.

The evening is sponsored by RIT’s College Panhellenic Council and the Center for Women and Gender. For more information, call 585-475-7464 or go to Take back the Night website.
