RIT’s Kern Lecture Series presents art curator Jonathan Clancy

In conjunction with the Frans Wildenhain exhibit currently on display at RIT’s Bevier Gallery, the College of Liberal Arts’ Kern Lecture Series features curator and author Jonathan Clancy Sept. 13.

In recognition of the Frans Wildenhain exhibit featured at RIT’s Bevier Gallery, the College of Liberal Arts’ Kern Lecture Series presents a talk by Jonathan Clancy, program director and American fine and decorative art faculty member at Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Clancy will present “Crafting Modernism(s): American Studio Ceramics in the Post-War Period,” 4 p.m. Sept. 13 in Carlson Auditorium, Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science. The talk is free and open to the public.

During his presentation, Clancy will explore American ceramics in the post-war era and the diversity of approaches available to ceramists during this time. The presentation will also enlighten guests on the multiple modernisms that American ceramists embraced and how the objects they created reflected cultural concerns and aspirations.

“Jonathan Clancy is a leading expert in American arts and crafts pottery,” says Jonathan Schroeder, the Kern Professor of Communication at RIT. “His talk will illuminate the ongoing RIT exhibition on Frans Wildenhain, which is a major exhibition on the ceramist and educator. Clancy brings expertise not only in aesthetic issues, but also economic issues that underpin our relationship with visual art.”

Clancy is an author, educator and curator. He co-wrote Beauty in Common Things: American Arts and Crafts Pottery from the Two Red Roses Collection, Frans Wildenhain: Creative and Commercial American Ceramics at Mid-Century and Art and Authenticity. His research has appeared in Modern Craft, Journal of Design History and the Smithsonian’s American Art Journal, among others. He is currently preparing a catalog of the painting collection at The Redwood Library and Athenaeum in Newport, R.I.
