Scouten Internship awarded to Chicago educator
Tracy Ann Weyhrauch will spend a week studying English literacy learning strategies for deaf and hard-of-hearing students
A teacher at Ogden International High School in Chicago has been selected as the 2015 Scouten Endowed Intern in English Literacy at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf.
Tracy Ann Weyhrauch, a resource room teacher of English for deaf and hard-of-hearing high school students, will complete her internship at RIT/NTID in Rochester, N.Y., April 6–10. Weyhrauch’s focus is on English language and literacy development. Throughout her career, she has experimented with a variety of teaching, motivational and implementation strategies to develop the literacy skills of her students in their language arts courses and other areas. Weyhrauch developed and is now implementing a vocational program at the high school for deaf and hard-of-hearing students to gain the English literacy skills they need for applying for jobs and for college.
According to Weyhrauch, most of her high school students seek jobs after high school graduation. Although she is interested in improving the vocational program she is creating at Ogden High School for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, Weyhrauch would like to learn more about the skills her students will need for success in college so that more of her students see college as a viable option. In addition, she plans to offer professional development opportunities for faculty and staff at the school and would like to establish ongoing collaborations with NTID faculty.
The internship program was established in 2004 to honor the memory of Professor Emeritus Edward L. Scouten who was a faculty member in NTID’s English Department from 1970 until his retirement in 1985. Selected interns must primarily teach deaf students English- Language Arts at the high school- or middle-school level and have at least two years of teaching experience.
Weyhrauch will receive a $1,800 stipend while working with NTID faculty members.
Applications for next year’s internship will be accepted through the year. Visit the Scouten webpage for more information.
