A message of caring from President Munson

Dear RIT Community,

On behalf of the entire RIT community, Iet me express my heartfelt condolences for the loss of one of our students.

The loss of a member of our community strikes us all. In times of sorrow, it’s important to rely on that same community for support. Tigers Care is more than just a motto. It is our campus commitment to promoting a culture of caring and support.

Dealing with loss is difficult under any circumstances. Every loss calls up other losses we have experienced and can lead to feelings of vulnerability, anxiety, sadness, and depression. Please take particularly good care of yourselves and each other in the days ahead. If you or your friends seem to be feeling alone or depressed, please seek support and encourage others to do so as well.

Let me emphasize that you are not alone. You are surrounded by people who care and want to help. The staff in the Division of Student Affairs is adding the support services for anyone who wishes to speak with a counselor or to come together with others in the community.

Counseling support will be available in the first lounge in Mark Ellingson Hall today until 10 p.m. and tomorrow from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. A counselor will be available today and tomorrow in Institute Hall, second floor - Office of Chemical Engineering from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. And we have expanded walk-in hours in Student Counseling and Psychological Services in the August Center today and tomorrow, from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Those are in addition to services already in place, which include the recently expanded time slots for new intake appointments and rapid assess walk-in hours, now available 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in Student Counseling and Psychological Services located in the August Center. For after-hours counseling services support, students can speak to a mental health specialist by calling (855) 436-1245. In addition, clinicians in the Student Health Center can now provide support for students needing psychotropic medications for mental health needs.

RIT is committed to providing quality, accessible mental health services to our students. We have re-tooled our programs and services over the past few years by adding staff; increasing education on prevention and early intervention strategies to students, faculty, and staff; providing on-site support during designated times in key campus locations; and adding a case management team to help assist students with accessing services on and off campus. Please visit the Tigers Care website for more resources and information.

In the meantime, be kind and patient with yourselves and do what you can to be of comfort to one another.

Sincerely,

David Munson
