Student encourages others to get involved
Student SpotlightMaya Anichini, second-year environmental sustainability, health and safety
Maya Anichini urges all students to become active members of the RIT community—advice that she has exemplified through membership in numerous campus organizations. Among other activities, she is a co-event manager for Saturday night events for RIT’s College Activities Board. Anichini is helping to organize the free CAB-hosted performance by comedienne Emily Galati at 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, in Ingle Auditorium.
Question: Where are you from?
Answer: I am originally from Germany but moved to Cherry Valley, N.Y., in my late childhood.
Q: What brought you to RIT?
A: I gathered an incredible feeling after visiting the campus on accepted students open house days. The campus was beautiful and so welcoming. The cultural diversity between the deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing students really intrigued me. The research and co-op opportunities seemed too good to be true.
Q: What has been your favorite RIT moment?
A: My best moments at RIT include getting so involved with the campus. I feel really balanced with my schooling, work, activities and free time. I would like to say that I have a good connection with most areas of the RIT community.
Q: What organizations are you a part of at RIT?
A: I am currently a part of the College Activities Board and work as a student ambassador in the Undergraduate Admissions Office. I am also involved with the College of Science Student Advisory Board, the Society of Women Engineers, Women in Technology and the Wells Project.
Q: Tell us about CAB Late Night Presents: Comedienne Emily Galati.
A: We are honored to welcome comedienne Emily Galati to RIT. She is known amongst her fans as “no ordinary comedian.” She offers up intelligent and hilarious material, with impeccable timing and a charm rarely seen on the comedy stage. It is definitely an event no one will want to miss!
Q: What would you like the RIT community to know about CAB?
A: CAB puts on events for students every Thursday and Friday along with many Saturdays out of each quarter. We are always proud to host the major concerts and comedians. These events are most often free or a small charge for all students. We are excited to present this year’s Freezefest and Springfest, which will be better than ever!
Q: How did you get involved with CAB and what is your role?
A: I applied for CAB during the spring quarter of my freshman year. I was just trying to get involved and saw their advertisements everywhere. I had only heard good things about the organization from my upperclassmen friends. I am currently the co-event manager, along with Taylor Gosselin, for all Saturday night events.
Q: What advice would you give to other students?
A: I would encourage all students to get more involved on campus. Apply for a job, join a club, attend activities—it’s all worth it. I hear way too many students regretting their years here at RIT because they didn’t make full use of the college experience.
Q: What are your plans for after graduation?
A: I hope to continue onto my Ph.D. and spend the majority of my time traveling with my work. Taking a couple years off in between to become a flight attendant will always be one of my dreams.
