Student finalist for Net Awards in London
App developer nominated in Emerging Talent of the Year category for prestigious award
Jen Lamere, a first-year software engineering student at Rochester Institute of Technology, has made the shortlist, ranking among the top five nominees, for the 2014 Net Award in the category of Emerging Talent of the Year. She will attend the finals ceremony in London’s Grand Connaught Rooms on May 9.
Lamere garnered enough online votes to rank among the top five nominees and receive an invitation to the ceremony, where a panel of 100 industry judges will select the winner. Lamere is the only woman nominated in the five-person shortlist and the only nominee from the U.S.
“I’m so excited to be going to London for the first time!” said Lamere, who is originally from Nashua, N.H. “It’s amazing how much support I’ve gotten from RIT and I’m so grateful for everyone who voted for me.”
Lamere will travel to London along with Lana Verschage, the director of Women in Computing in RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences.
The Net Awards, hosted by Net Magazine, celebrate the best in Web design and development. The Emerging Talent of the Year award recognizes up-and-coming developers and designers under age 20 who have really started to make their mark this year. Lamere won the grand prize at Boston’s TVNext Hack for inventing Twivo, an app that allows Twitter users to block television spoilers from their Twitter feed.
Also nominated in the Emerging Talent of the Year category are:
- Benjamin Hollway, a 16-year-old designer and front-end developer from Brighton, U.K.
- Ross Penman, a 15-year-old Ruby on Rails developer from Scotland, who built an app to let people know when the Apple Developer Portal was back up after a recent outage.
- Dominik Martin, a 16-year-old user interface and Web designer currently based in Munich, Germany, who designed a to-do-list app, an Indian restaurant guide and an app for scheduling meetings.
