The next generation of photojournalists is currently on display at Rochester Institute of Technology.

The 11th annual juried exhibition put on by the RIT Chapter of the National Press Photographers Association is taking place at the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. The work is on display until the closing reception on April 13 in the exhibition cases located in the mezzanine and center hallway on the second floor of Frank E. Gannett Hall on the RIT campus.

The RIT chapter invited three alumni to return to campus to judge student work from the photojournalism program. Seth Gitner, assistant professor of newspaper and online journalism at Syracuse University; Jacquelyn Martin, staff photojournalist for The Associated Press; and Charles Borst, director of photography at Education Week, selected 36 award-winning entries from eight categories and a total of 570 submissions.

“The winners were chosen because they contained that necessary mix of visual cohesiveness, storytelling moments and surprise—all necessary elements of photojournalism,” Borst says. “It is a great showing. They’re all really talented photographers.”

At the closing reception at 6 p.m. April 13, which is open to the public, the Gitner Family Photojournalism Endowed Award and the Paul and Louise Miller Scholarship will be presented to the two top portfolios submitted. Other award categories include best multimedia, picture story, feature, sports, sports feature, news and portrait/illustration.

The RIT National Press Photographers Association is a student-run professional organization that aims to build a network among the photojournalism students at RIT and carrying those connections out into the working world.
