Student Research and Innovation Symposium takes place Feb. 18
Popularity of summer sessions has led to the creation of a winter symposium
RIT students will have another chance to showcase their research and innovative work on Friday. The popularity of the summer graduate and undergraduate research symposiums has led to the creation of a new Student Research and Innovation Winter Symposium, which begins at 4 p.m. in Louise M. Slaughter Hall and the Center for Student Innovation.
“As more and more of our students become engaged in research and other innovative activities, we thought it necessary to create another forum for them to present their work and share it with the community,” says Jon Schull, interim director of the Center for Student Innovation.
More than 20 projects will be presented—either through an oral presentation or a poster session—by more than 60 students. A number of the projects are related to solving problems in Kosovo, where RIT partners with the American University in Kosovo. Some deal with the country’s energy problems; others focus on sustainability measures such as recycling. Other project titles include:
• Gestural Control of Flying and Rolling Robots and Computer Control of a Human Agent
• Evaluating the Development Scene for Microsoft Kinect
• Photovoltaic Smart Fridge
• Creating Parabolic Telescope Mirrors by Spin-casting Resins
Carl Lundgren, the lead organizer of the symposium, believes events that allow students to showcase their work are important.
“Students who are engaged in their scholarship get the opportunity to validate that effort through dissemination at the symposium,” he says.
