Students published on environmental magazine site
Nearly 30 students in Joel Helfrich’s “Introduction to Environmental Studies” class had their essays published online as part of Orion Magazine’s “The Place Where You Live” series. The students were assigned to write an essay of 350 words about their hometown and were encouraged to submit it to the bimonthly environmental magazine.
“I have found that once students are able to publish an essay online or a letter to the editor of a newspaper, they tend to appreciate the value of writing and want to participate more in the intellectual and public debates within society,” said Helfrich, an adjunct professor in the College of Liberal Arts.
The essays are available online but may be published in a future print edition of the magazine. The following students were published:
