Team publishes two papers on the inspection paradox
James Marengo, professor, School of Mathematics and Statistics; Anne Marino Himes ’07 MS (applied and computational mathematics); Cade Reinberger ’23 (computational mathematics), mathematical modeling Ph.D. student; and David Farnsworth, professor emeritus, School of Mathematics and Statistics, had two articles published in the Open Journal of Statistics: “Probability Distributions Arising in Connection with the Inspection Paradox for the Poisson Process” (February 2023) and “Probability Distributions Arising in Connection with the Inspection Paradox for Bernoulli Trials” (December 2023). The inspection paradox occurs when an interval between events is selected during a repetitive process over time, such as scheduled versus actual bus stop times.
