Tiger ROAR helps users show RIT spirit (and it just might create a ruckus)
Mobile app now available—just in time for Brick City Weekend
Get ready to roar like a tiger!
RIT has released its first official mobile application that allows users to display—audibly and visibly—their RIT spirit.
The Tiger ROAR, a downloadable app now available for Android smart phones, features the RIT Athletics tiger logo that “roars” when the phone is shaken or its screen is touched. With the deaf and hard-of-hearing community in mind, the screen flashes and the phone vibrates as the tiger roars.
The app was created to be used at RIT hockey games and other RIT sporting events. Available for download, the app is expected to be offered in the Android Market and iTunes App Store in the near future.
The idea for the Tiger ROAR app came from a member of a team of student ambassadors working with Ashley Hennigan, assistant director of undergraduate admissions.
“I have a team of Social Media Ambassadors—a special group of the larger Brick City Ambassador program,” Hennigan says. “I asked for input, and Kevin Granger sent the idea for the Tiger ROAR (among many other great suggestions).”
A group of RIT staff and faculty collaborated to turn the idea into a working app just in time for Brick City Homecoming & Family Weekend. That team included Thom Craver, Web specialist in the E. Philip Saunders College of Business; Andy Phelps, professor of interactive games and media; Joe Pietruch, lecturer in interactive games and media; and representatives from RIT Information and Technology Services. Pete Bella, senior graphic designer in RIT University Publications, originally designed the RIT Athletics tiger logo.
“I knew that a lot of schools had mobile apps,” adds Granger, a second-year physics major, “but we’re not just another one of those schools.
“We’re RIT—we stand out, we rise above and we roar the loudest!”
