Veteran CBS News Anchor Bob Schieffer to Address RIT’s 125th Commencement
More than 3,500 degrees will be conferred on graduates during weekend celebration May 21-22
Bob Schieffer admits that, as a young man attending Texas Christian University, he placed too much focus on building his career in broadcasting. “My great regret is that I never gave college a chance and it took many years for me to realize what I had missed,” he writes in the 2003 best selling book This Just In: What I Couldn’t Tell You on TV.
Schieffer takes another swing at the college experience when he serves as the keynote speaker for Rochester Institute of Technology’s 125th commencement. The veteran journalist will deliver his address during Academic Convocation, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. May 21 in RIT’s Gordon Field House and Activities Center.
A news reporter for more than 50 years, Schieffer recently celebrated his 40th anniversary at CBS News. He has served as moderator of Face the Nation, CBS News’ Sunday public affairs broadcast, since 1991, and he is also CBS News’ chief Washington correspondent, a post he has held since 1982. Over his career, he has been honored with virtually every award in broadcast journalism.
“As a senior statesman among journalists today, Bob Schieffer brings valuable insights that will help shape the perspective of our graduates, particularly as they enter a new era in their lives filled with boundless possibilities,” says RIT President Bill Destler. “It will be a tremendous honor to welcome him on campus to take part in this time-honored celebration.”
During the event, Schieffer will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. In addition, President Destler will confer degrees on more than 3,500 RIT undergraduate and graduate students. Other highlights of Academic Convocation include recognition of students graduating with honors and faculty members who won this year’s outstanding teaching awards.
Following that gathering, each one of RIT’s eight colleges celebrates commencement with individual ceremonies, during which graduating students receive their diplomas and are recognized individually. The various college ceremonies are scheduled as follow:
