Women’s ice hockey travels to Elmira for 2009 ECAC West Championship Tournament this weekend
Tigers will play SUNY Plattsburgh March 7
The RIT Tigers women’s ice hockey team, ranked second in the USCHO.com Division III Women’s Hockey poll, is the number-two seed in the 2009 ECAC West Championship Tournament, hosted March 7-8 by Elmira College. RIT will play number-three SUNY Plattsburgh, third in the nation, at 3 p.m. March 7.
This season, the Tigers (21-2-2), the highest scoring team in the nation with 122 goals, went 1-1 against Plattsburgh (21-3-2). Plattsburgh, the two-time defending national champion, has the longest current unbeaten streak in Division III at 12 games (11-0-1), while RIT has the longest current winning streak with eight straight victories. Both teams are tied for the most victories in Division III this season.
The Tigers, averaging 4.88 goals per game, have four players with at least 30 points, two more with at least 20 and nine more with at least 10. The squad has 15 players in double figures for points this season.
RIT is 17-1-1 in its past 19 games and 3-2-1 against nationally-ranked teams this season. The Tigers need one more win to tie the school record set in 2006-2007.
Top-seed Elmira, (20-4-1), ranked fifth in the nation, will host number-four Neumann (16-10) at noon March 7. Winners of the two contests will meet in the championship game at 3 p.m. March 8, with the victor receiving an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
This weekend’s games will be played in Murray Ice Center in Pine Valley, N.Y. Ticket are $5 for adults and $3 for children and students with ID per day.
