Growing up in a family of teachers, Nidhi Baindur has valued education from a very young age. Baindur, a second-year computational mathematics major from the island nation of Mauritius, is well on her way to helping others as just the second RIT recipient of the Newman Civic Fellowship, which recognizes and supports community-committed students who are change-makers and public problem solvers.

International students who started at RIT remotely during the pandemic continue to thrive
More than 200 international students began their studies at RIT remotely in fall 2020, including 65 undergraduate students and 159 master’s students. RIT Admissions officials said the students have done remarkably well given the challenging circumstances, and 83 percent of those students are now studying at RIT’s campus in Henrietta.

RIT seniors use mathematical modeling to explore COVID-19 questions for policymakers
Mathematical modeling has been a powerful tool for policymakers grappling with COVID-19 to help predict how targeted actions can impact the rates of infections, minimize the risk of exposures, increase recovery rates, and much more. Fifteen seniors who took the Senior Capstone in Math course this spring put their modeling skills to the test to help officials evaluate past policies and predict future outcomes.

RIT researchers create easy-to-use math-aware search interface
Researchers at RIT have developed MathDeck, an online search interface that allows anyone to easily create, edit and lookup sophisticated math formulas on the computer. Created by an interdisciplinary team of more than a dozen faculty and students, MathDeck aims to make math notation interactive and easily shareable, and it's is free and open to the public.

Imagine RIT Preview: Virtual Bugs
When the Seneca Park Zoo Society needed a way to create detailed 3D computer models of rare insects from Madagascar, they turned to RIT’s imaging science program for help. A multidisciplinary team of first-year students designed and built a new system to tackle the problem and will showcase the final product at the Imagine RIT festival.
