University of Rochester Medical Center’s Robert Rose gives an insider’s perspective April 8

A scientist who was involved in the development of the vaccine for cervical cancer will share the story behind the breakthrough.

Robert Rose, associate professor of medicine, and of microbiology and immunology at University of Rochester Medical Center, will present “Development of an effective, licensed vaccine for cervical cancer…the rest of the story….” at 4 p.m. April 8 in the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science auditorium on the Rochester Institute of Technology campus. Rose’s talk is part of the Distinguished Speaker Series sponsored by RIT’s College of Science.

“To the general public, the sudden appearance in 2006 of a vaccine capable of preventing uterine cervical cancer came with little warning. In reality, concerted efforts by several groups, including our own, over a roughly 20 year period had preceded FDA approval,” Rose says.

Rose will discuss the pre-approval period of the vaccines and the controversy that arose in response to “governmental efforts to mandate universal vaccination of pre-adolescent females.”
