Catharsis: Images of Post-Conflict Belfast
Like a modern day flâneur, I stroll throughout post -conflict Belfast crossing from the Catholic enclaves to photograph on Protestant side of the peace wall. Former sites of conflict, newly proscribed as tourist sites, are combined with my family album photographs, made by my father on the Catholic side of the wall, to forge new relationships around the meaning of the vernacular (private) and the documentary (public) photograph. Many dualities are explored in this work; father /daughter, public/private, Catholic/Protestant, Nationalist/Loyalist as well as an underlying theme of former conflict sites reinvented as tourist sites. The GPS notation references both Belfast's military past and its present preoccupation with redefining itself as a tourist site. This was my attempt to cross the divide.
