From Computing Exploration to Microsoft
Coming to RIT with no prior computing experience, Quincy's journey began in the Computing Exploration program. ”CompEx was amazing," Quincy shared, noting its role in shaping his well-rounded skills by allowing him to try different computing majors and discover what resonated with him.
Quincy, a performing arts scholar, discovered his interest in software engineering at a Society of Software Engineers (SSE) event, after being invited by a fellow performer. SWEN 250 affirmed his passion with its structured approach, aligning well with his preferences.
Each year presented new challenges, but Quincy learned the value of seeking help early, "It's okay not to have all the answers, but it's important to know where to find them." He received support from friends and mentors within Women in Computing (WiC), Eight Beat Measure, and CompEx which ultimately empowered him to take on leadership roles like Allies Committee head (WiC), President (8 Beat Measure), and Student Ambassador (CompEx).
Through his experiences on-campus and on co-op, he has refined his career goals, exploring roles in software engineering to program management at Microsoft. "It's funny because in high school, I said, 'I want to work at Microsoft. I want to be a software engineer,' and the fact that it happened so soon is unreal."
Looking ahead, Quincy aims to blend his technical skills with leadership and collaboration. "I want to be a technical program manager who can code and lead a team effectively," he shared. He advises others to seek help early and utilize resources like friends, tutors, and advisors. "Even if an opportunity seems unfamiliar or intimidating, go for it because you never know when you can tie those experiences together and apply those skills to your goals."
