Machine Learning Meets Law Enforcement in RIT Research Project
Angela and Anita Srbinovski are twin sisters studying computer science and mathematics at RIT helping with an innovative three-year research project alongside Dr. Ernest Fokoué. The project is a collaboration with the Rochester Police Department and the U.S. Department of Justice to analyze police body-worn camera footage integrating mathematics, statistics, computer science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, criminal justice, and social sciences.
By applying mathematical concepts to real-world data, the ultimate goal is to identify potential policy improvements and develop shareable methodologies for law enforcement agencies. This work will enhance openness and responsibility in policing while simultaneously deepening the sisters' expertise in machine learning algorithms and data analysis tools.
Anita was excited about joining a research project making a real-world impact. “The chance to leverage technology and data for the benefit of the community is exciting. I’m thrilled to be part of a research journey that holds promise for revolutionizing accountability, transparency, and fairness within our justice system, and I’m eager to make a lasting impact through transformative change in Rochester and beyond.”
Angela was drawn to Dr. Fokoué’s passion and vision for the project. “His dedication to advancing knowledge and fostering a collaborative research environment is inspiring. Working with the Rochester Police Department and U.S. Department of Justice aligns perfectly with my desire to serve my community. I am grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in society."
The Srbinovski sisters chose the Computer Science program at RIT for its reputation in innovation and hands-on learning. They were drawn to the program's blend of academics and real-world applications, as well as RIT's overall commitment to research, industry connections, and the renowned co-op program. They expressed pride in being RIT students, emphasizing how the university's culture of excellence, inclusivity, and support has prepared them for future challenges.
Angela shares, "My overall experience at RIT has been nothing short of exceptional. I've relished every opportunity here, from engaging in research to contributing to the vibrant campus community." This sentiment is echoed by Anita, who adds, "RIT isn't just a university; it's a driving force for transformation and discovery, shaping me into a resilient, forward-thinking individual ready to tackle the world's complexities with confidence and purpose."
To complement their computer science major, Angela and Anita each decided to pursue a minor in mathematics. They recognize the fundamental role mathematics plays in computer science, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence and machine learning. As Angela notes, "Mathematics provides critical thinking and problem-solving skills for developing advanced algorithms and understanding complex systems." By combining their computer science expertise with a mathematical foundation, the sisters are enhancing their ability to create intelligent systems that drive societal change. This interdisciplinary approach exemplifies their commitment to push the boundaries of technology and make a positive impact in their field.
For students seeking research opportunities, Anita recommends staying true to your passion and focused on your goals. "Embrace curiosity, seize opportunities, and never underestimate the power of persistence. Explore diverse interests and seek guidance from mentors who inspire you. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and setbacks are stepping stones toward success.” Angela adds, "Take advantage of every opportunity for growth, both inside and outside the classroom. Dive into internships, research projects, and extracurricular activities to gain practical skills and insights into your field of interest. Never hesitate to seek guidance from mentors, professors, and professionals. Their wisdom and support can provide invaluable direction and encouragement along your journey.”
