Numerical pathology in selected Kubelka-Munk formulas, and strategies for mitigation
August 17, 2021
The Kubelka-Munk model is used widely, not just in color imaging, but in many facets of technology. Published in 1931, the formulas were cumbersome for hand computation. Kubelka later (in 1948) published a series of formulas better suited to hand computation. However, both sets of formulas have issues that can create trouble when implemented in computer code. This paper identifies several of these issues, discusses methods and alternate formulas to mitigate them, and compares the new formulas to those in the prior art.
