Packaging Design / GRDE 432 Chase Design and Paperboard Packaging Alliance 2024 Competition
This interdisciplinary course includes fourth year graphic designers and industrial designers who are joined for the Paperboard Packaging Alliance Student Design Challenge by Packaging Science students. This semester began with a project sponsored and led by Chase Design for concepts for cat and dog pet treat products. Five teams of three to four members participated in that project. Five teams each with three or four members participated in the Paperboard Packaging Alliance 2024 Student Design Challenge, with a total of 24 class members.
The PPA Student Design Challenge is an annual design competition in which attracts the top packaging design programs in the U.S. This year's challenge was to create innovative fiberboard or paperboard package solutions for fresh fruit or vegetables with an added objective of addressing a community or humanitarian need. Food choices for this project included: Garlic, Kiwi, Peppers, Cherries, and to-go Salads.

This is Kia Ora Kiwi Packaging from Team Pack Attack for the Paperboard Packaging Alliance Student Design Competition. This colorful and decorative package attracts consumers with authentic New Zealand artwork, as it holds 6 kiwis securely. Buyers can see the fruit through the openings in the package, which is printed using soy-based inks. The organization that this team is collaborating with is Save the Kiwi, a group dedicated to the well-being of the beloved Kiwi Bird.

Garlic, anyone? This is the Guardians of the Gardens’ solution for the Paperboard Packaging Alliance Student Design Competition. Grovey Garlic is a distinctive package for urban professionals and others who value freshness and beautiful design. The six-sided package holds six cloves and the form language relates to the team’s interest in brand extension to include organic honey. The team is collaborating with The Urban Garden Initiative.

This is the Whipper Snacker solution for older cats and dogs. The team created a nostalgic and fun brand to celebrate older pets. A vintage color palette, fun typefaces and treatments, a retro shape language, and playful pet icons (named for grandmothers of team members) tell a heart-warming story as it connects with pet lovers.
